Rights of Free Thought

Rights of Free Thought:

I chose this somewhat simple title as a starting point for both the conception of this project, and the topic of my first post. First, an explanation: among many friends of mine we have for quite some time enjoyed liberal discussions on philosophy, theology, ethics, and ect. These topics have always been a driving point of everything I do in life, and I think it is safe to say the same of the others involved in this project. What I am attempting to mitigate here is an open discussion by four people on said topics. Two of this people come from a liberal Christian background , (I apologize if either of them disagree with the term “liberal”) and two come from a more secular (Although tinted with Zen) perspectives. I will leave it to the individuals involved to reply with posts discerning more specific information on their respective backgrounds. In my own case, having been a writer and artist for most of my life has certainly given plenty of time and opportunities to reflect on these questions.

In any case, one thing we can all agree on is this: the importance of open discussion in regards to “the big” questions is a founding principle of any working democracy. Anger, political correctness, or fear, are by no means adequate reasons for shying away from these questions, and no one here will do so. The following blog will contain posts in the form of essays by these individuals, on various topics of there choice. There are no “rules” so to speak, as this is less a debate and more akin to open letters by each person. Hopefully, at the end of this a live debate will take place between everyone involved. Also it is my personal hope that these discussions and essays will spark discussion amongst others, for what good is freedom of speech without citizens willing to exercise it?
